This past January we returned to Bangkok for the third time as a family. What we love about Bangkok is the mix of old and new. You will see skyscrapers and traditional food carts, you will see Tuk Tuks and temples.

Bangkok is a big city of 10 million, but it is easy to get around. We used the BTS, MRT, riverboats and ride share.

Bangkok is one of the best places to take teenagers. This post covers what to do, where to stay and when to go.

Bangkok with teenagers: our quick take

Here is what we would tell another family before they go.

• Stay near the train. We stayed in Phra Khanong (here is where we ate near the station), and Silom and the Riverside are also popular. Being close to the BTS or MRT matters more than the hotel itself.
• Get around by BTS, MRT, riverboat and ride share. That was our mix all trip. For the river, take the BTS to Saphan Taksin, and Sathorn Pier is about 100 metres away.
• Don’t just go to temples. Cover knees and shoulders for the Grand Palace. A guided tour that fits several temples into one day helps avoid temple burnout.
• Have an air-conditioned backup. Bangkok is hot and humid. Sea Life, Madame Tussauds, MBK and the bowling alleys are all indoors.
• Save evenings for the fun stuff. Ratchada Train Night Market, the Mahanakhon SkyWalk after dark and a dinner cruise from ICONSIAM.
• Our top three for teens: Siam Discovery Shopping Mall, Mahanakhon Skywalk and a Street Food Tour

A 3-day Bangkok itinerary for teens

Day 1: Old city and the river

• Morning: the Grand Palace as early as you can, then the National Museum nearby. Don’t miss the Royal Carriage Room.
• Afternoon: the hop-on hop-off boat along the Chao Phraya, with a cool lunch break somewhere along the way.
• Evening: a dinner cruise from ICONSIAM. We went with the Chao Phraya Princess, which sits mid-priced. The buffet has Thai and western dishes, and Bec and Marley loved the prawns and sushi.

Day 2: Siam and the city views

• Morning: Madame Tussauds right at 10am opening. We had the place almost to ourselves. Then Sea Life at Siam Paragon (a combo ticket saves money).
• Afternoon: MBK for teen shopping. It is 8 floors of shops, and you can walk straight in from BTS National Stadium.
• Evening: the Mahanakhon SkyWalk after dark, for the city lights from the 78th floor.

Day 3: Adrenaline and a night market

• Morning: go-karting at EasyKart in RCA. Go early or midweek to avoid long waits. The kids came out grinning.
• Afternoon: a food tour. Ours covered five places that had each been in business for well over 50 years.
• Evening: Ratchada Train Night Market. The food is a bit pricier than other night markets but good, and we loved the Chinese hot pot.

Quick heads-up: Some of these activities come with risk. Hikes, fast rides, water sports. Follow the safety instructions and do what feels right for your family.

Best time to visit Bangkok with teenagers

Bangkok is hot all year. Some months are easier than others.

• November to February. The coolest and driest months. Also the busiest and the most expensive, especially December and January. Our last trip was in January.
• March to May. Hot. April is the worst. Do temples first thing and go indoors by midday. Songkran is in mid-April and teens love the water fights. Here is our Songkran guide.
• June to October. Rainy season. Heavy showers, mostly in the afternoon. Fewer people and cheaper rooms. September and October are the wettest and streets can flood. Keep an indoor plan ready.

Beating the heat

• Temples and walking in the morning.
• Malls, aquariums and cinemas from midday.
• Carry water. Wear sunscreen and a hat.
• Head back out at night for the markets.

Things for kids in Bangkok – Sealife Aquarium Bangkok

Sea Life Bangkok Ocean World aquarium is the largest in Southeast Asia.

It covers approximately 10,000 square meters with hundreds of different species on display. Bangkok Sealife has the special experience you pay extra for such as diving with sharks.

You walk through the Shark Walk, Coral Reef, Rainforest and tropical Ocean sections. Look to be honest if you have been to another SeaLife somewhere else in the world this will not be ground breaking, but its a good choice to kill a few hours away from the heat. Book your entry today!

The Madame Tussauds Bangkok Wax Museum is a whole lot of fun for families visiting Bangkok. The thing we like about visiting Madame Tussauds is it is not all Hollywood Stars, singer and sports people.

Each Madame Tussauds has a room of local content that allows you to learn about some important figures unique to your location. In Bangkok the first room was dedicated to the Thai Royal Family.

The wax museum is not just about wandering through and getting pictures with your favourite celebs there are also some interactive exhibits. You can score a goal with Messi and Ronaldo watching, you can make a putt with Tiger Woods hanging around. You can be a judge on Thai Idol and more.

Whip out you camera and get pictures with Avengers, Singers like Katy Perry and Ariana Grande and have a nescafe with George Clooney. We arrived right on opening time at 10 am had the place to ourselves.

Bangkok Hop on hop off bus

A Hop-On Hop-Off bus gives you an overview of the city. Bangkok is hot and hard work to get around, and this makes it easier. The route runs past all the main attractions, so you can see everything from Khaosan Road to the Grand Palace.

The bus makes getting around easy. If your kids don’t like walking in the heat, this is perfect. Just be aware that traffic in Bangkok is busy very busy and you will spend a lot of time waiting in traffic to get around the city.

Bring sun protection if you sit outside. Book your tickets before you go.

Bangkok things to do – food tours

A food tour is a good way to get teens trying new things. They learn what they are eating and where it comes from.

Some tours include a cooking class. Others just take you to the places locals eat every day.

We were lucky enough to sample foods influenced by the Chinese, Muslims and Indians. Of the 5 places, we sampled foods they had all been in business for well over 50 years.

A food tour is a good pick if you are not sure about the food. Some to look at are the Bangkok Midnight Food Tour by Tuk Tuk, the Old Siam Bangkok Food Tour with 15+ tastings, or a cooking class at the Blue Elephant Bangkok Thai Restaurant & Cooking School.

Go Karting in Bangkok

Address: 31/11 RCA Plaza, 2nd floor, RCA Alley, Bangkapi, Huai Khwang, Bangkok 10320, Thailand

We booked based on a few good and honest reviews. It is not perfect, but the fun outweighs the flaws. Each race is only about 8 minutes, but it feels longer when the kids are grinning ear to ear and their father is racing them.

It is cheap. The kids get ice cream and the adults get a post-race beer. Book Go Karting today in Bangkok.

Tip: Book EasyKart for earlier in the day or go midweek if you want to avoid the long wait times, especially with younger racers

Dinner Cruise in Bangkok

Tickets: We booked our cruise through Viator

When we were in Bangkok it only made sense to do a dinner river boat cruise on the Chao Phraya River . The dinner boat cruise tours leave from out front of the ICONSIAM shopping centre. The two hour cruise was real highlight as you got to see the Bangkok skyline all lite up while enjoying a buffet dinner. There are several famous temples, bridges and building you can see from the water.

The dinner was buffet style where you could go back for food as many times as you wanted for a choice of both Thai and western dishes. Bec and Marley particularly enjoyed the prawns and sushi on offer. As a bonus after dinner was served there was live entertainment with a local singer bashing out popular hits that everyone would know.

There are numerous companies who do this cruise, some cheap and some expensive, we opted to book with the Chao Phraya Princess which price wise sat in the middle.

If you’ve got time before your cruise, Asiatique The Riverfront is a short ride further down the river and has been running Jurassic World: The Experience since August 2025, a walk-through with life-size animatronic dinosaurs including a moving T-Rex. Worth building into the afternoon if the kids are dinosaur fans.

Tip: We had to catch a water boat from the Sathan Pier across to ICONSIAM to meet our dinner cruise. Cruises usually depart late afternoon and continue into the evening, typically between 7pm to 9pm

What to do in Bangkok – Hop on Hop off Boat

The hop-on hop-off boats run up and down the Chao Phraya River. They are an easy way to see Bangkok with teenagers.

The boat stops at a number of important points along the river such as the Sathorn Pier (BTS Saphan Taksin-S6), ICONSIAM Pier, LHONG 1919 Pier, Ratchawongse Pier, Pakklong Taladd (Yodpiman) Pier, Wat Arun Pier, Tha Maharaj Pier, Thonburi Railway Station Pier, and Phra Arthit Pier.

Boats depart every 30 minutes from 9 piers on the Chao Phraya River. Buy your tickets now and skip the line.

We accessed the boat at via the BTS Saphan Taksin station on the Silom line which is located around 100 meters away from the river. Its the easiest way to get to the river boats.

Bangkok National Museum

The National Museum in Bangkok is located just near the Royal Palace and is a good world schooling stop.

The museum blew us away from the moment we walked into the first gallery. You are greeted with artifacts dating back as far as the history of Thailand.

The giant Buddha head salvaged from Ayutthaya is a stand-out feature of the room. As you move through the different sites at the museum, you will see displays of metalwork, porcelain, fabrics and much more.

Not to be missed is the Royal Carriage Room which showcases coronation and celebration carriages the Royal Family have used dating back 300 years. It is also the home to some of the Royal Piers and coffins that have been used. 

It is a good way for teens to learn about the history of the country.

Night activities in Bangkok for families – Ratchada Train Night Market

What to do in Bangkok at night with kids? A night market! You will have to travel to the outskirts of Bangkok for this one.

The MRT station at Thailand Cultural Centre is straight over the road. Ratchada Market is huge by any standards and it’s packed to the rafters with people every night.

It is a mix of food and the usual goods like clothes, sunglasses, crafts and souvenirs. Every travelling teen loves to look through them.

Keep an eye out for some of the vintage clothes and accessories that today’s teenagers love, too.

It’s that type of market where your teen can try crazy food such as scorpions and bugs! This is one of the easiest activities to do in Bangkok with kids, just make sure you stick together as it gets really busy.

The food is a little more expensive than most night markets but still of high quality. We can recommend the Chinese hot pot that we enjoyed it was amazing. You will often find live music or tunes blasting from one of the food and drink bars on site.

Bangkok Safari World

Safari World is a popular family attraction on the edge of Bangkok.

The park has a safari park, marine world and bird park, and you can get up close to the animals. The animal shows are the main event, including a Russian walrus show.

There are restaurants and souvenir shops onsite.

If your teens like animals, Safari World is worth a day.

Grand Palace Bangkok

The Grand Palace is on every list of things to do in Bangkok.

The Grand Palace in Bangkok was built in 1782 as the home of the Kings of Siam. The large complex of buildings is one of the best things to see in Bangkok. Get your tickets ahead of time.

If you are visiting the Grand Palace with teens there are some things you need to know:

• You must have your knees and shoulders covered for women

• No tight-fitting or revealing clothes

• Men must be wearing pants

• Don’t wear offensive, religious or controversial t-shirts

• It can get really busy. Have a plan if you get separated

• If you are not dressed appropriately you will be asked to cover up

Things to do in Bangkok with teenagers – Learn to Surf

The Flow House is an artificial surfing simulator where you can bodyboard or flowboard. It is in the Sukhumvit area, and a good way to beat the heat.

You can have a lesson or just have your own fun. Along with the Flow Rider machine, there is also a sports bar, a cafe, a plunge pool and a games room.

If you need gear, there is a Rip Curl flagship store onsite.

Go Fishing in Bangkok

You don’t think of fishing in Bangkok, but it makes a fun, competitive family activity.

Head out to Bangkok’s most popular fishing site at Bungsamran. This park is friendly for beginners and advanced fishers alike. You can hire fishing rods, bait, nets and more at the site.

You can catch over 40 different types of fish, including the giant Mekong catfish. There is no direct public transport link, so we suggest you take a grab.

Get a Thai Massage in Bangkok

Teens like a Thai massage too. There are plenty of places in Bangkok where teens can relax.

After a day of walking, a Thai massage is a good way to rest tired legs. Or take a Thai massage workshop and learn the techniques yourself.

Exploring with a tuk-tuk

Tuk tuks are everywhere in Thailand. You can hop in one for a short ride or take a tour.

To be honest, riding in a tuk-tuk is quite an experience, actually i would go as far to say its such a cool thing to do in Bangkok. There is nothing better than zipping around the streets of Bangkok in a Tuk-tuk. Be aware use Grab to book them otherwise the one on the side of the street will overcharge your family,

This sport has become more popular during the last few years with the rise in popularity of mixed martial arts events on TV.

Mahanakhon SkyWalk Ticket 

The 78th floor is a long way up and it is not for the faint hearted. For thrill seekers in the family there is a glass floor to walk across with a view straight down to street level. Go after dark and the skywalk gives you the city lights as well.

If the glass floor isn’t extreme enough, the building added the I-Tilt in May 2025, an outdoor platform that tilts you 65 degrees over the edge, 296 metres up. It’s the only attraction of its kind in the world. Worth knowing before you commit: they use heart rate monitors and double-layer safety nets, so it’s genuinely well managed for how intense it looks.

Fantasia Lagoon Water Park

Centrally located on top of the Mall Bangkae roof is Fantasia Lagoon, Water Park. You will find multiple pools and water slides to have fun with. On the floor under the water park is an amusement centre. Combine all this with the mall and you have a full day out with teenagers in Bangkok

Dream World Bangkok

Dream World is just outside the city. It has 43 different attractions onsite, from roller coasters to indoor snow tubing.

You will find the usual stage shows, restaurants and even a small water park.

Where to shop in Bangkok with teenagers

Bangkok is a good place to shop on any budget. Teens like the malls.

You will find luxury malls and busy markets.

There are also floating markets, where vendors sell their goods on boats along the waterways.

The MBK centre in Bangkok is not the newest or the most upmarket shopping mall in Bangkok (you can find that opposite at Siam Discovery and Siam Paragon). What you will see at the MBK is 8 floors of shops.

MBK has over 2,000 shops selling everything from clothing to electronics at reasonable prices. There are also food courts and entertainment zones. You can easily spend hours here.

Since January 2026, MBK’s fourth floor is also home to Cave Fantasy, a glasses-free 3D digital art museum, a solid option to build into a shopping day if the teens need a break from browsing.

If your teens want something with more of an edge than the traditional malls, Emsphere near Phrom Phong BTS has a rougher, industrial street-style feel, trendy fashion brands, and a supermarket that stays open into the early hours, handy if you’re out late and need a snack run.

Annual events in Bangkok that teens will love

Here are some annual events teens will like.

Songkran Festival (April): Songkran is Thailand’s New Year, known for its water fights. Teens can join in with locals and tourists. It is a good way to cool off in the hot season.

Loy Krathong Festival (November): Loy Krathong is the Festival of Lights. People release small decorated floats onto rivers and lakes. Teens can make their own krathong and join in.

Elephant Tourism

Elephant attractions are popular in Thailand. Check how the animals are treated before you book.

Two sanctuaries that put the elephants first, and are close enough for a day trip, are Elephants World Sanctuary and Pattaya Ethical Elephant Sanctuary.

Both these centres look after Elephants that are rescued from the exploitation of logging and tourism industries. You can feed and bathe them.

A day trip to Ayutthaya from Bangkok

If you are going to spend some time in Bangkok with teenagers on holiday a day trip to Ayutthaya from Bangkok is a must while you are staying in Bangkok.

The historic city of Ayutthaya is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is in ruins, but still impressive.

Things to do in Bangkok for young adults

Older teens and young adults want different things. Bangkok has plenty. Know the rules first.

The rules

• The legal drinking age is 20.
• Bars and clubs check ID. Carry your passport or a copy.
• Vapes are illegal in Thailand. Leave them at home.

Street food is an easy, cheap way for teens to try Thai food.

It is a quick way to get local food without sitting down in a restaurant.

Some of the most popular Bangkok street foods include som tam (a hot and spicy papaya salad ), moo ping (grilled pork skewers with sticky rice), and guay teow (a noodle soup that goes with chicken, pork or beef stock and finished with rice or egg noodles).

Markets such as Jodd Fairs and the WMarket near Phra Khanong BTS are a great choice for trying lots of yummy street foods and traditional Thai dishes at a good price.

Where to stay in Bangkok with teens

Stay near the train. It matters more than the hotel. Here is how the main areas compare.

• Siam. The BTS lines cross here. Sea Life, Madame Tussauds and MBK are all close. Busy and loud.
• Riverside. Boats, ICONSIAM and the dinner cruises. The BTS is further away. Ask if the hotel has a shuttle boat to Saphan Taksin.
• Silom. On the Silom line. Saphan Taksin BTS is close, and the river boats are about 100 metres from it.
• Phra Khanong. Where we stayed. Quieter and cheaper. Good food near the station (here is where we ate). You take the BTS to everything.

What to look for:

• A pool. Teens need somewhere to switch off after a hot day.
• Two rooms or a family room. Everyone needs space.
• A short walk to the BTS or MRT.

Our hotel picks: For Siam, Novotel Bangkok on Siam Square has a solid pool for kids and sits right next to the BTS. For Riverside, Avani+ Riverside Bangkok has a rooftop pool and runs a free shuttle boat across to a BTS station, which solves the transport question above. For Silom, Centre Point Plus Hotel Silom has apartment-style rooms that work well for a family, close to Sala Daeng BTS.
